Master of Applied Linguistics - opinions

Master of Applied Linguistics - opinions -- Posted by Ralph Leibniz on 05-30-04 13:22

I am looking for a good MA in Applied Linguistics to do either online
or by distance education. The most intriguing one I've found is from
the University of New England in Australia. Their program is
available mostly or entirely online, is relatively inexpensive, and
can be completed in one year. But, is it any good? I am looking to
teach English at a university in Japan and in the Gulf and they
usually want an MA in linguistics or a related field. Will employers
like these happliy accept and online MA like this one? UNE is an
accredited Australian university and is certainly legitimate. My only
worry is that the program might be considered too lightweight to be
worth anything when I do end up applying for jobs.

Any opinions aout this particular MA from UNE?

Thanks,

R.

You should ask at the nearest Japanese embassy whether they will accept
the online MA from that or any university. I'm no longer informed about
what's acceptable in Japan (where I taught English in universities for
10 years until 10 years ago), but it's not up to individual
universities to decide that your degree is or is not legitimate; it's
up to the Ministry of Education. The same is true here in Taiwan, where
the MOE has a list of all universities and all programs that are
considered legitimate.

My gut feeling is that such a degree would not be considered legit in
Taiwan.

Thanks.
