Online College Recommendations

Online College Recommendations -- Posted by adultlearner on 09-28-04 11:41

Hello,

I moved to the DC area last year and prior to that I was attending
Indiana Institute of Technology's accelerated degree program. While I
was able to attend class in person then, that's really not an option
now so I am looking around for online accelerated degree programs. I
currently have about 60 credits toward a degree in Business
Administration with an MIS emphasis. The 60 credits is made up of a
combination of coursework and CLEP tests. This is what I am looking
for:

* An accredited online accelerated program that offers a bachelors in
business
* A program that is liberal about letting a student use CLEP or DANTES
tests to eliminate coursework
* A program that will give me credit for the substantial amount of IT
certifications I have

I've been looking at several schools such as Excelsior, Parks College,
University of Phoenix and University of Massachusetts. If anyone here
has had experience with a school that offers what I am looking for, I
would really appreciate your input.

I have been looking at University of Phoenix, but found their
curriculum a little light. While I understand getting the degree is
"the important thing", I feel I need to get something more than
parchment for my 15 - 20k invesment. (UoP is expensive). They do give
credit for a variety of past experience, but they are inflexible
regarding the core bachelors program. You must take their classes, no
matter how pedestrian to you. This is a stumbling block for me. I
would rather not sit through "Intro to Unix" yet again. Strayer seems
to take past history as well, and they have an online program, but
their reputation is not stellar from many of those I've talked to, and
they are also expensive.

UoP has a resource fee of $50 per session (I wouldn't call it quarters
or semesters since they're five weeks long) that covers all your
online books. No paper copies required. I called them and found that
the guy who was my Enrollment Counselor is no longer working there. I
wonder about that...

Another track you could take is get transferrable credits from
Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC, or NOVA CC). They have
good programs, teachers, and the local undergraduate schools will
explicitly tell you which courses will transfer. I'm thinking of
George Washington, they had a NVCC transfer sheet that was wonderful.
I might go ahead and take some online classes with NVCC, until I can
get my head out of my ... and decide where to go.

I am planning on enrolling in the next week somewhere, so if you have
any input, would appreciate it. Good luck to you.

Try SUNY Empire State Collage: http://www.esc.edu They are
liberal in their transfers policy, and have recently
developed a significant online offering.. I don't know if
they have you exact requirement vis. degrees, but the nature
of ESC is such that you can more or less design your own
program, so long as it is coherent, and meets basic
standards.

Hope this helps, and let us know..
