Athabasca University
Athabasca University -- Posted by Neil L. on 10-07-04 13:26
Hello Group,
Anybody here graduate from Athabasca University? I'm thinking about
entering the Post Diploma BSc in Computer Information Systems program. I
can get a generous amount of credit for my college diploma.
I've been doing a little research on how the degree is regarded by
Universities in Canada and the US. So far, I've found out that most
Canadian Universities see the degree as being a rather lightweight when
compared to their Computer Science degrees and may not be competitive enough
for graduate studies without some additional courses. The program doesn't
really include any advanced algorithm studies, theory of computation, or
assembly language courses. Other than that, the program seems fairly decent
for a distance education degree. On the other hand, American Universities
seem to regard the degree very well. As long as it's a 4 year accredited
Bachelor's degree. Which I've confirmed with Athabasca that it is the
equivalent of. Again, some additional courses may be required to be at a
graduate study level.
Has anybody out there completed the degree and gone on to do graduate
studies? Any advise or personal experiences would be great!!!
Thanks.

The Canadian Universities do have a problem with Athabasca, but it is more
from penis envy than anything else. I am working on a Masters with them and
am combining courses from them the University of Edinborough, and the
University of Alberta.
The MBA program at Athabasca is in the top three of Canada.
It is attended and endorse by executives from the top 400 companies in
Canada, and many of the Forbes 500 in the USA.
As for computer sciences, I would think you need to be at somewhere that has
more hands on stuff and tools, and you have access to the big computers for
research and work.

Although they can't rate the University directly, I was reading in
Macleans that many Canadian Universities are envious of Athabasca
because of their growth.
I've also heard their MBA is in the top 25 in the world, but I haven't
been able to find a source for that. I have heard Athbasca's MBA is in
the top 3 in Canada.
I am an AU student myself, and did as much research (this group
included) as possible.

As a student myself working on a Masters Degree, I know the other
universities are envious of the ability of AU to grow with minimal
investment in capital assets. That in itself is also a liability as
politicians love to have ribbons to cut to big concrete things.

Maybe they should create a ribbon just for the sake of cutting it?
Re-open something? Like say a mini-mall or... Ralph Klein's new suit?
