DENVER -- Johnson & Wales University has announced expansion plans to accommodate student enrollments that are projected to quintuple in the next six years.
The Providence, R.I.-based hospitality school over the next five years will purchase an additional 13 acres from the University of Denver, which will double the size of J&W's current 13-acre campus here. The new campus, which opened this fall with 325 students, expects a student body of 1,800 by 2006.
"We're delighted with the opportunity to build an even stronger presence in the West," said Mark Burke, president of J&W's Denver campus. "We have received tremendous support from the community in the short time we have been here. Colorado employers have been enthusiastic about the career-oriented programs that we offer, and this purchase will enable us to grow and add additional programs in the very near future."
The new campus currently offers associate's degree programs in culinary arts, business administration and marketing as well as bachelor's degree programs in marketing, international business and management. By fall 2001 J&W's Denver campus also will offer associate's degree programs in hotel management and food and beverage management and bachelor's degree programs in hotel management; foodservice management; financial services management; and sports, events and entertainment management.
The Denver campus curriculum also offers a "Garnish Your Degree" program in culinary arts for people who hold college degrees. It replaces a similar J&W curriculum offered for the past several years in Vail, Colo.
J&W officials at the Denver campus claim they have received more than 20,000 inquiries about places in next year's freshman class.
Separately, Thomas Wright of Cranston, R.I., was promoted to the post of senior vice president of development for Johnson & Wales. A 21-year veteran of the university, Wright has held several administrative positions, including dean of the College of Culinary Arts and, most recently, vice president of culinary education. In his new position he will oversee business development and the university's alliances with industry partners.
J&W, which was founded in 1914, has more than 12,000 students on campuses in Providence; Denver; Charleston, S.C.; Norfolk, Va.; North Miami, Fla.; and Gothenburg, Sweden.
