News Notes - Artículo Breve

Hispanic Times Magazine - October 1, 2000

Success Measured One Student At a Time

Armed with corporate know-how, an unrelenting drive and a passion for education, Sara Martinez Tucker is resolved to double the rate of Latinos earning college degrees by 2006. This crusade is part of her mission as president and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF). It is also a goal inspired by her parents' deep-rooted value for education.

Tucker also has the uplifting task of working with institutions that, like her family, value educating Latino youth. Among her success stories is earning a $50 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. This heartening accomplishment was followed by another milestone. A week after the Lilly Endowment grant was announced, Tucker was in negotiations with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. HSF is now a participant in the $1 billion Gates Millennium Scholars Program.

Comcast Newsmaker of the Year

Mia Mendoza, founder and president of the Mendoza-Harmelin, the Bala Cynwyd-based marketing communications agency that specializes in marketing to the Hispanic community, has been named "Comcast Newsmaker of the Year" as one of the top business women in the Greater Philadelphia region.

The purpose of the "Comcast Newsmaker of the Year Award," now in its second year, is to honor individuals from local organizations who have had the most positive impact on the Greater Philadelphia region during the past year.

Mendoza, along with winners in seven other categories including arts, community, education, government, health, religion and youth, will be presented with the "Comcast Newsmaker of the Year Award" at an Emmy Awards-style gala in early October.

Home Shopping: Espanol Cerebrates New Broadcast Expansion to 24-Hours a Day, 7-Days a Week

(From left to right): Jed Trosper, President of HSN International; Mark Bozek, HSN President & CEO; and John de Armas, Senior Vice President of Home Shopping Espanol -- with approximately 100 Home Shopping Espanol employees -- celebrate the Network's expanded broadcast hours to 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. This expansion, which was effective July 4th, is a direct result of the Network's increased popularity and success within the Hispanic population around the country. To support this expansion an additional 40 Hispanic employees have been hired who will relocate, with their families, to the Tampa Bay area.
