"Simple as that!"

PSA Journal - August 1, 2004

As the new editor, I am very proud to have this opportunity to work in a different and creative environment. Having been in education for years, I feel very lucky to explore this new path. Although teaching is satisfying work, I have been exploring more intently artistic avenues over the last ten years or so with getting a graphic arts degree, participating in a college campus mosaic mural, singing in two different community choruses, getting a part in three community plays, as well as some taking some coursework in creative writing.

Previously, all of my pursuits had been in academia accumulating three college degrees. Enrolling in college directly after high school, I almost continuously attended for more than twenty years. Alter such intense schooling, I felt I wanted to have different challenges--the artistic avenues that I have been exploring. I believe this PSA Journal opportunity has come at the best possible time for me, and I will work very hard to continue the current high standards for each issue.

"Simple as that!" wrote Nancy one year ago describing the process of each issue (Journal, August 2003). The process is simple, as she outlined, but not so easy to accomplish without the precision that years of experience can give. During the month of May with meeting every week, Nancy instructed me as much as she could for being the new editor. She also passed along files, offered great organization tips, and gave loads of encouragement. I am truly grateful for all of her time and effort in helping me. Without experience, needless to say, I have had some obstacles in the transition process: first, setting up an office with buying another computer and new furniture; second, switching internet providers; third, taking care and lots of time with each procedure to prevent mistakes; last, attempting to keep all of the correspondence and members' requests in good order. Besides the office work, there are also supplies to purchase, mail to retrieve, and deliveries to make. Of course, with any new position, usually obstacles eventually do work out. Unfortunately, I was naive in thinking that the "working out" would be quicker. I look forward to describing the process in Nancy's words, "Simple as that!"

As a bonus in my new position, many generous members have sent me well wishes and encouragement. My first day I received welcoming e-mail and over the month have received more e-mail, as well as postal mail, expressing support. I do want to thank everyone for these expressions, which were extremely important as I "took over the reins" from Nancy. Recognizing and appreciating her talents with the support and leadership from Jean Timmermeister, FPSA (Publications Vice President), I hope to follow Nancy's direction for the ongoing improvements of the Journal. Again, I am excited to be working in this creative environment and very proud to have this opportunity to work as your new Journal editor.
