Update on Education - ArtÃculo Breve
Hispanic Times Magazine
-
September 22, 2001
Education nourishes the soul. It is the passport to the middle class, and the reason that HISPANIC TIMES and other media sources emphasize the importance for young people to stay in school, enroll in colleges and universities, and earn higher education degrees.
The Census Bureau reports that the education gap between Latinos and non-Latino whites is narrowing at the high school level, while there is greater disparity at the college level. It is disheartening to note that Latino adults are more than three times as likely as non-Latino whites to be high school dropouts. They are also nearly three times less likely to have college degrees.
Overall, 57 percent of Latinos 25 and older are high school graduates, compared with 88 percent of non-Latino whites. About 11 percent of Latinos have a college degree, compared with 28 percent of non-Latino whites.
Scholarships and government grants and loans are available to qualified students. There is an ever-increasing demand for bilingual men and women in the workplace. The importance of diversity is recognized in major corporations, national laboratories, federal agencies, the military, and the global workplace.
Opportunities abound! Let education nourish your soul!
