Knowing the difference - guidelines for life and metalworking - Mark: My Word - Column

April 1, 1993
Over the years, as I've studied life in general and metalworking in particular, I've learned that there are certain insights into the nature of things that have proven useful to me. Many of them can be expressed following the same formula.
Keeping these "distinctions" in mind has spared me some foolish mistakes in editing as well as in life. Some of these ideas came to me from personal experience, others I picked up along the way because their rightness was striking. Some may seem to state the obvious--those are the ones where not knowing the difference has caused the most trouble. Here's a selection of my favorites:
Facts are not the same as knowledge.
Knowledge is not the same as wisdom.
Science is not the same as truth, at least not the whole truth.
College degrees are not the same as being educated.
Having lots of money and stuff is not the same as being rich.
Profitability is not the same as prosperity.
Pleasure is not the same as happiness.
Sex (widely overrated) is not the same as love (widely underrated).
Being busy is not the same as being productive.
Speed is not the same as efficiency.
Value is not the same as cost.
Cost is not the same as price.
Wages and benefits are not the same as pay.
License is not the same as freedom.
Wishes are not the same as rights, even in America.
Familiarity is not the same as understanding.
Authority is not the same as leadership.
Giving in is not the same as compromise.
Change is not the same as progress.
Old age is not the same as maturity.
Being young is not the same as being youthful.
Showing good manners is not the same as showing respect.
Religion is not the same as holiness.
Legality is not the same as morality.
What you remember is not the same as what happened.
Fearlessness is not the same as courage.
Desperation is not the same as inspiration (but they're close!)
Finally, meeting specs is not the same as quality. And quality is what this whole issue is about. Happy reading!

I honestly believe there is a place where a degree can be attained by
experience and competence.. For example to immigrate to the US using
H1B, you can use 3 years of experience for 1 year academic. I think
thats a good standard to start with plus some kind of project
submission to prove competence... (Read More)
