Adult Online Usage Approaches 50 Percent in US - Study - Internet/Web/Online Service Information

Newsbytes News Network - December 13, 2000

As the number of people in the US going online continues to rise, the total Internet user base may be broadening, according to new research released today.

Interep [NASDAQ: IREP], a sales and marketing company specializing in radio, the Internet and new media, said it analyzed research by MediaMark and found that 45 percent of US adults used online services in the last 30 days. Forty-eight percent of adults living in the top 10 media markets took to the Net.

The study found increased Internet use in all age groups, but the strongest growth was among those 45 to 64 years old.

Interep found signs that the online population is slowly becoming more representative of the offline world. Average household income of online users dropped from $66,000 in 1999 to $65,500 in 2000, even though overall household income increased. In addition, the number of Internet users with college degrees fell from 42 percent to 38 percent.

"This decreased percentage does not imply an actual decrease in the number of upscale, highly educated users, but rather a broadening of the total Internet user base," said Interep.

The study also found that a higher percentage of online shoppers came from the upper-income, college educated and professional categories, but Interep suggested that this difference may soften as the total number of online shoppers increases.

More information on Interep is available online at http://www.interep.com .
