MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2004
More than 1.2 million Wal-Mart associates and their families
become eligible for higher education benefits at Capella
Capella University, an accredited online university headquartered in Minneapolis, announced today that it has been selected by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, as a preferred online education provider. With the launch of Wal-Mart's new My Education Connection benefits program, 1.2 million Wal-Mart associates and their family members will have the opportunity to earn bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees online at Capella University. Wal-Mart selected Capella University from a national field of e-learning universities because of the quality of its degree programs as well as its unequaled customer service for students.
Wal-Mart's My Education Connection is a benefit that offers associates the opportunity to take online courses from preferred education providers with the benefit of negotiated tuition discounts. The program becomes available to all Wal-Mart associates across the United States this month.
"This agreement with Capella University gives our associates greater flexibility in earning undergraduate and graduate degrees - anytime, anywhere," said Charles Baldwin, vice president of Wal-Mart's People Development Group. "It doesn't matter where they live, which of our locations they work at, or what time of day or night they want to study. This collaboration with Capella allows Wal-Mart associates throughout the United States to earn advanced college degrees from a high-quality, accredited institution at their convenience - and get the personal support they need to meet their educational goals. Capella's learner support services -- provided while associates continue to work -- made Capella the clear leader. We're delighted to offer this value-added benefit to all of our associates."
"We are thrilled to be selected by Wal-Mart for its new educational program," said Capella University President Mike Offerman. "This is a great opportunity for us to reach across America and provide a full spectrum of higher educational programs that meet the specific needs of working adults."
Rick Neal, an application developer at Wal-Mart headquarters, is currently a Ph.D. student at Capella University. While Mr. Neal earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at traditional universities, he highly recommends the online experience at Capella. "The coursework and interaction with other learners sets the stage for new discoveries and connections that I've never experienced before," said Mr. Neal.
