Striking a Balance Between Work and Life; Junior League of San Francisco Announces New President, Renee Tucei

Business Wire - June 21, 2002

Business Editors

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 2002

Some believe it's difficult to create and nurture a well-rounded life that includes leadership positions at work and in the community. Couple that with taking care of a family and a person's plate is more than full. Women with high-powered careers, like Acting Governor Jane Swift of Massachusetts and former Presidential advisor Karen Hughes, have recently acknowledged the challenges of serving as a leader at work or in the community and at home. Here in San Francisco, no one understands the importance of striking a balance between work and life more than Renee Tucei, the incoming president of the Junior League of San Francisco. She successfully manages all those roles -- and then some.

Tucei took the helm of the Junior League of San Francisco ("JLSF") as President on May 1, 2002. Professionally, Tucei is employed as Executive Vice President and Controller for California Federal Bank ("Cal Fed"), one of the 25 largest banks in the United States, overseeing a staff of 125 employees in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles. In this position she manages all accounting, budgeting and analysis functions for Cal Fed and supervises preparation of all financial reports for the bank and its parent companies. At home, Tucei serves an equally important role as the mother of four teenage children.

Tucei has been a member of the Junior League since 1994. She originally was a member in Richardson, Texas and transferred into the San Francisco chapter in 1995. Her responsibilities with JLSF have included being Treasurer of the League, Next-To-New (the League's thrift shop) Treasurer, Finance Committee Chair, Treasurer-Elect, Cookbook Committee Co-Chair and Fundraising Council Director.

As president of JLSF, Tucei will lead an organization of over 2,300 women with an annual budget in excess of $1.9 million. Of its 2,300 members, 87% work full or part-time outside the home, 65% are married, 98% have college degrees and 85% volunteer 1 to 3 hours weekly. Each year, JLSF volunteers provide approximately 115,000 volunteer hours, at a value of $1.7 million, to its community programs (based on the independent sector's valuation of $14.38 per volunteer hour).

About the Junior League of San Francisco

For over 91 years, JLSF has been working to make the Bay Area better. An accomplished collaborator with other community groups and the public sector, JLSF identifies community needs and develops effective and responsive programs to serve those needs. JLSF has been at the forefront of emerging issues, often when they are low profile, misunderstood and poorly addressed. As a problem surfaces within the community, JLSF is frequently the first organization to recognize and address the issue, providing volunteer efforts, financial assistance and public support.

The Junior League of San Francisco is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
