WANTED: IT Educators - ITI and Colorado State offer distance learning to students interested in becoming IT educators - Industry Trend or Event
Computing Canada

February 4, 2000
A shortage of IT educators, which is adding to the IT industry's challenge to find qualified employees, has brought Halifax-based ITI Information Technology Institute and Colorado State University together to launch a distance learning program which combines IT training with a master's degree in education.
Beginning in May, the program will combine the applied information technology program offered by ITI with a master's of education degree specializing in adult education and training from Colorado State.
The collaborative program will build on ITI's post-baccalaureate program by giving graduates credit toward a Colorado State master's degree in education and human resources studies.
Colorado State will deliver courses to students who meet both ITI and Colorado State School of Education entrance requirements.
By offering university training online, students on ITI campuses across Canada and the U.S. will have access to the courses.
According to ITI's president, Richard Franklin, the program is another mechanism to facilitate the IT skills gap in North America.
"It is about helping to produce more IT skills and IT educators in the marketplace," he says.
Not only are new companies looking for these kinds of skill sets on a day-to-day basis, says Franklin, existing companies have legacy systems that need retooling and employees that need constant retraining.
"If we can't close this skills gap in the next three or four years, there is the distinct possibility that North America could lose its leadership position in the wiring of the planet," he says.
Course work for the master's degree will emphasize several educational issues such as adult learning, teaching and teaching processes, as well as developing programs for adult learners.
Using mixed media including video, online instruction and interactive online meetings, the program will enhance the students' knowledge of technology and prepare graduates to be adult educators.
