NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1999--
ClassPoint Enables Interactive Collaboration
Among Graduate Students For Online Classes and
Group Projects Beginning in the Spring 1999 Semester
White Pine Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: WPNE), a leading provider of multimedia conferencing applications for the Internet and intranets, today announced Tulane University has chosen its ClassPoint(TM) software to enable distance learning and collaboration among its graduate students starting today. The Center for Applied Environmental Public Health, a division of the Tulane Medical Center, will offer graduate students in the Occupational Safety & Health Management program the opportunity to earn their two-year degree solely via distance learning.
"We chose ClassPoint because of its flexibility, interactivity and low cost as well as its unique design that mirrors a traditional classroom structure." said Kevin Johnson, learning technology services manager at Tulane University. "We are implementing this distance learning technology to extend course offerings to students in remote locations and give them real-time access to faculty and to their classmates. This move toward distance learning is also an economic one in that it helps the university maintain a competitive edge over other educational institutions."
Following a successful pilot program in the fall semester of 1998, Tulane will use ClassPoint to offer two graduate-level distance learning classes this semester. A total of 60 graduate students will participate remotely from all over the country and around the world in weekly two-hour class sessions. The graduate students are mid-career professionals in the private sector and federal government, mainly safety officers and industrial hygienists, who are looking for career advancement, to improve their skills and also to meet federal regulations set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). While Tulane uses many distance learning tools to conduct classes, these students are using ClassPoint primarily to collaborate on group projects and to communicate with instructors and faculty, as well as for instructor-led distance learning. The university considers it an added benefit that ClassPoint allows for the cultivation of group leadership and management skills for its graduate program students.
"As more universities are looking to expand full-time enrollment and increase revenue, they are turning to distance learning as a viable solution," said Peg Landry, director of product marketing for White Pine Software. "ClassPoint offers the same instructor-controlled, spontaneous interaction as a traditional classroom environment."
Tulane is exploring future uses for ClassPoint which include working with the US Navy to deliver programs to physicians around the country and at sea. They will also develop a renewable energy project that uses ClassPoint to deliver training and facilitate community involvement in Latin America.
