Hazelden's Distance Learning Programs Receive Approval from American Psychological Association

Business Wire - November 1, 2000

Health/Medical Writers

CENTER CITY, Minn.--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 1, 2000

When Minnesota-based Hazelden Foundation began offering internet-based distance learning through www.DLCAS.COM in 1998, they were spotting the first signs of a change in the culture of addiction prevention and treatment. Hazelden projected--correctly, it's turned out--that with an increasingly diverse group of health and human service organizations requiring some training in alcoholism and addiction, there would be an increased need for a one-stop online resource to keep professionals up-to-date on evolving certification and recertification requirements and the courses they needed to fulfill them.

This month, DLCAS.com took it a step further when they won approval from the prestigious American Psychological Association, opening up distance learning to APA's more than 159,000 members, many of whom are required or elect to seek certification in one or more addiction-related disciplines. DLCAS.com also recently received approval from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the California Board of Behaviorial Sciences, and the National Board of Certified Counselors.

Why specifically is internet-based distance learning--combining online coursework, e-mail or bulletin board discussion, and chatroom classroom sessions with instructor and students anywhere in the world--playing a critical role for these professionals' continuing education? According to Karin Nord, Hazelden Information and Educational Service Internet Marketing Manager, the reasons are simple: "The technology has improved to make distance learning very effective; leaders like DLCAS.COM have been active in advocating the format and insuring quality; and, most significantly, professionals from all of the health and human services fields need the prevention and addiction training and are demanding distance learning as a study option."

Courses offered through DLCAS.COM run the gamut from addiction studies staples such as ethics or relapse prevention, to cutting edge research-based coursework in addiction neurobiology, to highly sought after subjects such as addiction and multicultural or special population issues and case management of dual disorders. Instructors are some of the leading luminaries in the field, including Craig Nakken, Dennis Daley, Dr. Terrance Gorski, and Dr. Socorro Herrara. In addition to course offerings, the DLCAS.COM site also features a free clearinghouse of news articles, facts, and helpful links on related health-care issues.

According to Nord, plans for next year call for 100 new courses, including groupings designed specifically for educators, prevention specialists, and marriage and family therapists. "We hope DLCAS.COM becomes a core tool for anyone who needs to stay informed about advances in prevention, addiction and recovery."
