CENTER CITY, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2000
When Minnesota-based Hazelden Foundation began offering internet-based distance learning through www.DLCAS.COM, they were spotting the first signs of a change in the culture of addiction professionals. Hazelden concluded--correctly, it has turned out--that in a field demanding both in working hours and emotional commitment, professionals would support a one-stop online resource that kept them up-to-date on constantly evolving certification and recertification requirements and gave them the courses they needed to fulfill them.
Internet-based distance learning--combining online coursework, e-mail or bulletin board discussion, and chatroom classroom sessions with instructor and students anywhere in the world--is playing a critical role for continuing education in the field of addiction. And more and more states and organizations are recognizing distance learning courses for certification and recertification. Why? According to Karin Nord, Hazelden Information and Educational Service Internet Marketing Manager, the reasons are simple: "The technology has improved to make distance learning very effective, leaders like DLCAS.COM have been active in advocating the format and insuring quality, and, most significantly, professionals are demanding it."
Courses offered through DLCAS.COM run the gamut from addiction studies staples such as ethics or relapse prevention to cutting edge research-based coursework in addiction neurobiology, and, of great importance to counselors seeking to fulfill recertification requirements, long-term case management of dual disorders and a growing number of courses focused on multicultural or special population issues. Instructors are some of the leading luminaries in the field, including Dennis Daley and Allan Zuckoff, Dr. Carlton K. Erickson, Dr. Judith Landau, Melody Beattie, and Peter Bell. "Our own efforts at DLCAS.COM have created a tremendous interest in distance learning--our advocacy has helped many states, most recently Texas, Illinois, Florida, to examine course standards and develop key criterion," says Clay Garner, Hazelden's IES Executive Vice President.
In addition to course offerings, the DLCAS.COM site also features a free clearinghouse of information about addiction and related health-care issues to anyone with an interest in the subject. Via a relationship with www.jointogether.org, new items and research articles are pulled from resources around the globe and updated daily. According to Garner, the 50 plus courses currently available at DLCAS.COM are only the beginning. Plans for the next twelve months call for over 100 courses, including groupings designed specifically for educators and prevention specialists. "We hope DLCAS.COM becomes a core tool for anyone who needs to stay informed about advances in prevention, addiction and recovery."

Given how freely National seems to accept transfer credits, this is
almost amazing. However, teaching credentials are not degrees and they
have different requirements/rules. At most she would have expected to be
able to transfer in 6-9 units. And that would be at most.
