ADVISORY/The Leaders in Rich Media for the Internet Will Debut the Future of Distance Learning With Leading Edge

Business Wire - June 1, 2001

Business Editors

ADVISORY...for Wednesday (June 13)

HANOVER, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 2001

Leading Edge Design & Systems (Leading Edge), a full-service integrator of enterprise-wide multimedia content management and distribution systems, is being joined by RealNetworks (NASDAQ:RNWK), Virage (NASDAQ:VRGE), Artesia Technologies, and EMC (NYSE:EMC) to present a free seminar on the use of rich media as the essential part of an effective distance learning program.

The seminar will be a one-day event on June 13, 2001 at the Sheraton Crystal City in Crystal City, Virginia.

The day will consist of two half-day seminars discussing and demonstrating techniques to improve the distance learning experience by incorporating rich media, such as video, audio, and PowerPoint. The presentation will focus on the various technologies involved in the management and delivery of that content for a richer distance learning solution.

The goal of distance learning is to recreate and deliver the in-class experience directly to the student desktop. According to Joe Gordon, Leading Edge's President, "What has been missing from online learning is the multimedia experience, such as the student being able to see, hear, and interact with the instructor, rather than just reading pages of plain text and communicating just through text chat." The Leading Edge solution uses intelligent and intuitive programming so that students can now have that same face-to-face interaction with instructors in a live or on-demand basis.

"We're happy to be working with Leading Edge and our other partners to present this solution to the distance learning market" said Mike Eastman, Director of Channel Sales for RealNetworks, "Distance learning is growing due to the need to educate more people in more convenient and effective ways, but it has grown at the rate it could because the experience in the classroom was not being adequately recreated online. Our team has solved that problem."
