US Signal Helps Cooley Law School Unite Campuses Across Michigan; Sets Foundation for Distance Learning Next Fall; Cooley Leverages Low-Latency IP Network

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- US Signal today announced it has completed a major connectivity project for Lansing, Mich.-based Cooley Law School, one of the largest and fastest growing law schools in the nation.
The project included linking Cooley's main Lansing campus with Cooley's two other campus locations in Grand Rapids, Mich. and Oakland County, Mich. via high-speed/low-latency connections. The Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity provided by US Signal across Cooley's campuses represented a 15- fold upgrade in speed, taking communications from 3 MB per second to 45 MB per second.
The upgrade has effectively brought all three campuses onto one central network, allowing all locations to quickly and easily draw upon information on everything from alumni records to financial aid. Cooley has also taken advantage of the additional bandwidth to establish complete Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) networks at its Lansing and Grand Rapids locations, using the school's own network to handle calls instead of traditional per- call/per-minute toll calls.
The multi-campus connectivity was also established to provide the infrastructure necessary for true voice/compressed video over IP distance learning. Cooley is currently developing a curriculum within its master's program that will utilize US Signal connectivity to deliver classes from its Oakland site via compressed video to Grand Rapids and Lansing. The program is expected to be available for the 2005 fall term.
"Our work with US Signal reflects Cooley's overall strategic plan for growth and our goal to be a leader in distributed learning for the legal community," said Charles Mickens, Cooley CIO. "The US Signal solution was cost-effective and delivered exceptional technical performance. Connections from Grand Rapids to Lansing are taking less than 10 milliseconds, which is phenomenal for a virtual private network (VPN)."
US Signal noted that its extensive fiber footprint was well-suited to meet Cooley's multi-campus needs. Following the addition this year of a 50-mile SONET ring in Lansing, US Signal is now comprised of over 500 miles of fiber optic metro rings around 14 high-growth cities. It also includes more than 60 points-of-presence on 2,500 route miles of long-haul fiber connecting first-, second- and third-tier markets in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
"Cooley's need for low latency across multiple markets was a natural match with US Signal's network. We've been pleased with the opportunity to help Cooley take their plans for growth and distance learning to the next level, and look forward to working with them in the future," said Barry Raterink, president of US Signal.
"We give US Signal high marks across the board and see them as a partner who understands our needs. We look forward to working with them, particularly as they are active in many of the markets we consider future opportunities for Cooley Law School," Mickens added.
