NanJing Normal University Selects Enterasys High Performance
Gigabit Ethernet Switching Solution
Enterasys Networks, a Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) company, today announced that NanJing Normal University, one of China's oldest and most respected teaching institutions, has chosen its high performance SmartSwitch Router (SSR) technology to facilitate powerful distance learning capabilities, including interactive videoconferencing and Video-on-Demand (VoD) based teaching services. The selected technology is integral to Enterasys Networks' Inherent Internetworking(TM) (see Cabletron Unveils Inherent Internetworking, dated 02/24/00), a strategy for migrating to standards-based, high performance converged networks.
"Through the use of Enterasys Networks' SSR solution, students can seamlessly access the Internet and send email to professors and faculty from any station within the campus, thereby communicating more effectively than at any time in the past," commented Mr. Jun Kong, Information Center technical manager, NanJing Normal University.
Doctor ChuanShi Liu, director of Information Center continued, "Additionally, and most importantly, we have prepared ourselves for the introduction of distance learning applications such as videoconferencing and video-on-demand classrooms, ensuring our University stays competitive within the Chinese education marketplace."
NanJing Normal University has around 100 years of teaching history, and has steadily gained a reputation for providing the highest quality education throughout the region. The university's networking communications has grown to support more than 4,000 stations and future expansion plans include providing services to over 10,000.
Mr. Tao Huang, vice president of NanJing Normal University explained, "Our university campus has three locations; the farthest distance between two is approximately 18 miles. Our network communications support a growing number of users -- set to reach over 10,000 shortly. The SSR solution from Enterasys Networks has allowed us to deliver high performance networking to thousands of users, and its unique Layer 3/4 services have prepared the campus for future high-demand, Quality-of -Service (QoS) sensitive applications."
NanJing Normal University utilizes inherent functionality within the Enterasys Networks family of Layer 3/4 SSRs to create the optimum environment for supporting both video and data traffic within a network. QoS, traffic prioritization, bandwidth provisioning and rate limiting are all capabilities integral to Enterasys' SSR and SmartSwitch technology, and form the basis of Inherent Internetworking. The solution, which includes SSR8600s and SmartSTACK Ethernet switches, also provides wire speed routing, high scalability and enhanced security across NanJing's long distance network.
Enterasys Networks Senior Director, Voice and Convergence Solutions, Ray Wright concluded, "Enterasys Networks' SSR technology is widely deployed around the globe to support time-critical, bandwidth-demanding applications such as distance learning. When the network becomes the critical point in service delivery, QoS and bandwidth control technology within the SSR bring endless opportunities to advance communications."
About NanJing Normal University
Nanjing Normal University is situated in Jinling, the capital of six ancient dynasties. It was originally known as Sanjiang Normal Academy, founded in 1902 by Zhang Zhidong. The Normal Academy gradually evolved into the Nanjing Advanced Normal School-one of the two advanced normal schools in China at the time, and had a prominent position in the history of the country normal education. After a nation-wide university, college and academic department reorganization in 1952, it became known as Nanjing Normal Collage, and has since then occupied the former campus of Jinling Women College of Arts and Sciences.
