RAVEN distance-learning program offers schools and other organizations anywhere in the world a unique opportunity to study and learn about birds. The program utilizes video-conferencing technology that allows the participants and the instructor to hear, see and interact with each other in real-time from remote locations. RAVEN offers educational programming in natural habitats, combined with high-quality video footage; audio clips and still photographs to enhance the overall experience. As a teaching tool, birds vividly illustrate several important environmental topics, including ecology, endangered species, and conservation. RAVEN makes these topics and other educational opportunities available to people around the world.
How does it work? RAVEN features an interactive mobile robot that wirelessly follows instructors through the National Aviary's twenty indoor exhibits. At nearly six-feet tall and over 500 pounds, RAVEN is powered by two high-speed computers. This impressive system makes the entire Aviary available as a roving classroom and allows instructors to take students directly to the Aviary's birds without leaving the comfort of their school.
Each RAVEN program is just $125.00 per session and lasts one hour. The National Aviary provides activities and resources to be used before, during and after each RAVEN program to ensure a dynamic learning experience on our FREE award-winning "Connecting the Classroom" Web Curriculum. RAVEN programs are an excellent way to avoid the hassles of off-site visits (no permission forms, lunches, transportation costs, or tickets needed!) And, all RAVEN programs meet or exceed National Science, Technology and Environmental Education Standards. For more information, please contact the National Aviary's RAVEN Coordinator at 412-323-7235 ext. 241.
