Bell Atlantic joins Alcatel DCS parade - Bell Atlantic Corp.; Alcatel N.A. Cable Systems Inc.; Alcatel Network Systems Div.; digital cross-connect system

Bell Atlantic has become the latest carrier to invest in wideband and broadband digital cross-connects from Alcatel Network Systems.
The carrier's three-year, multimillion-dollar contract with Alcatel calls for the vendor to supply its series 1631 SX (wideband) and higher-capacity 1633 SX (broadband) DCSs, which maximize existing switching and cable capacity for transmission of voice, data and video.
Bell Atlantic has already started deploying the DCSs in Maryland to help fulfill a contract it recently earned from the Maryland state government to build an interactive distance learning network linking 200 Maryland schools and 40 other institutions. Bell Atlantic has had a tariffed distance learning service in Maryland since last year.
It will also install them in Delaware as part of another distance learning project, and in unspecified applications elsewhere in its region.
The Alcatel DCSs have a FlexPoint feature that smoothly accommodates the transition from asynchronous to SONET applications, helping carriers position their networks for SONET while continuing to satisfy customers' asynchronous needs, said Bob Reed, vice president for product line management at Alcatel.
In addition, the 1633 SX has a non-blocking switch matrix to help ensure that broadcast signals are efficiently routed to their destination, said Reed.
Bell Atlantic plans to choose a second DCS vendor "sometime soon," said a company spokesman.
The carrier's agreement with Alcatel comes less than two months after Nynex committed to deploy Alcatel wideband and broadband DCSs in central offices in New York City's Manhattan borough and in Cambridge, Mass. SNET, MCI and Southwestern Bell are also using the Alcatel DCSs.
Alcatel Network Systems is based in Richardson, Texas.
