Online Instruction On Horizon, Districts Claim - school districts; National School Boards Foundation survey - Brief Article

Electronic Education Report - June 21, 2002

Within the next three years, students will receive a substantial amount of instruction online. That's what 28% of the 811 responding school districts indicated in a recent survey from the National School Boards Foundation. "Substantial" is defined as one-third or more of total instruction.

The survey was conducted by Burlingame, Calif.-based Grunwald Associates, a market research firm specializing in technology.

According to survey respondents, the Internet is currently used most often for Internet searches (74%), teacher research (72%) and lesson planning (38%); student projects, student research and distance learning languish at the bottom of the list, with 8%, 7% and 5% respectively.

Currently, classes utilizing the Internet are primarily social studies - 76% of respondents said their district uses the Internet in social studies instruction - followed by science, 58%, and language arts, 37%.

As schools creep toward online instruction, local funding was the overwhelming source of technology funds for 32% of large districts, 41% of medium districts and 36% of small districts.

E-rate is by far the most popular outside technology funding source; 71% of districts responding use E-rate to help fund technology purchases.
