First California graduates ready to take leadership roles in health care
The University of Southern California graduated its inaugural class of Master in Medical Management candidates this summer.
The participants--physician executives from various health care organizations across the U.S.--completed the one-year degree program designed to prepare physicians in entrepreneurial leadership and fiscal responsibility.
The MMM is an integrated program and a collaborative effort of the Marshall School of Business, the School of Policy, Planning, and Development, the Keck School of Medicine at USC and ACPE.
"The MMM is the best program of its kind in the country as measured by the quality and dedication of the faculty, the impact of the learning on participants' careers and from the enthusiastic response of the students," says associate dean Dave Logan of Marshall's Office of Executive Development, which helped deliver the program.
The innovative format of the MMM combines four, 1-week residential sessions with distance learning interims providing the flexibility that physician executives require. Lectures, case studies and experiential exercises were held during the residential week.
The interim sessions extend and reinforce the acquired concepts and skills and are an integral part of the program. Doctors use real-life issues from their organizations in their projects.
"The interim projects and work were a critical part of the learning process," according to graduate Bill Mills, MD, MMM, CPE of New Jersey. Early in the MMM, Mills was elected president of the 400+ medical staff at three divisions of Centerton Family Practice in Elmer, N.J. "I will be serving as president when our new regional medical center opens in 2004."
Mills credits the support and encouragement from his colleagues in the program for his success. Other graduates had similar stories to share.
"I put the entire MMM content to use and, without a doubt, that contributed mightily to the improvement at PACE," says graduate Michael Patinas, MD, MMM, FACP, CPE, who serves as medical director of Providence Ambulatory and Education Center in Portland, Ore.
"Providence is a large system, and there are several choice senior jobs becoming available. Now that I have the MMM, I feel it is time for me to make a move up. When I do, the MMM will more than provide ROT for me. It already has for my department."
"An excellent mixture of academic, clinical, practical and networking, the MMM program provides physician executives with entrepreneurial leadership tools they need to go out and do it!" agrees Marvin Stein, MD, MMM, PA, who is applying his new skills to extend his company, Professional Urologists Payments Plus Service, a third party insurance claims administrator, into multiple insurance products and new markets.
Yvonne Stratton, an obstetrician/ gynecologist in Walla Walla, Washington who can no longer practice due to a knee injury, developed a new personal service business that leverages her existing relationships and medical expertise into a truly entrepreneurial venture utilizing advanced technology for renewed skin.
"I now feel confident at developing a successful long-term strategy for my business," Stratton says.
The MMM is also awarded by Tulane University in New Orleans and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
