ENT

May 19, 1999
Designed to help customers leverage the power of high-speed networks, IBM announced a series of research initiatives under the banner Advanced Internet Projects. As part of these projects, IBM will develop technologies and applications that use bandwidth-rich networks. Some of the programs covered in this announcement include the International Center for Advanced Internet Research (iCAIR), European Advanced Internet Applications Center, advanced Internet research, advance Internet standards and advanced Internet policy.
With Northwestern University and other partners, IBM launched iCAIR, which taps advanced research projects to deploy interactive applications with enterprise customers. Some of the applications include global multiparty videoconferencing, virtual reality-enabled manufacturing and design, collaborative engineering and full-screen interactive distance learning. IBM's technologies play a role in iCAIR's projects.
The European Advanced Internet Application Center will be established in the Netherlands in partnership with the Telematics Institute and SurfNet. The center is designed to extend IBM's technology to European customers that are ready to deploy advanced Internet technologies. Through this center, IBM supports the GigaPort project of the Dutch government to develop an advanced communication network.
In addition, IBM is working on standards for ensuring Internet services as well as being involved in several public policy initiatives to enable the Internet's continued growth.
Finally, IBM is working on Internet-based research projects that include Internet2, Internet2 Digital Video Network, Internet2 Distributed Storage Infrastructure, Internet2 university research grants and the QBone Project. n
