3Com Awards $600,000 in Technology Grants to Help U.S. Communities

Business Wire - October 29, 2004

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Urban Challenge Program in Its Fifth Year Brings Total Number of Grants to 57 and $5.8 Million

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced that it has awarded grants totaling $600,000 in networking equipment and consulting services to six organizations across the country. 3Com's five-year old program called Urban Challenge helps organizations integrate technology into communities and enhance education and public municipal services. Today's winning organizations are: Burpee Museum of Natural History, Rockford, IL; City of Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL; City of Plainfield, NJ; Hawaii Department of Education, Honolulu, HI; Potters House School, Grand Rapids, MI; Southwest Educational Development Center, Cedar City, UT.

"Over the past five years, the Urban Challenge program has enjoyed continued success in providing communities the technology to improve education-related programs," said Susan Bowman, senior vice president of human resources, 3Com Corporation. "With the 57 grants to-date, 3Com continues its tradition of helping communities increase the effectiveness of their information technology infrastructure."

Created in 1999, 3Com's Urban Challenge program provides innovative technology to communities in order to increase access to educational programs, job training, health care and other community services. The grants announced today bring the total to 57 grants and approximately $5.8 million since the inception of the program five years ago.

3Com evaluated more than 250 inquiries from schools, community and government institutions. This year's winners in alphabetical order are:

Burpee Museum of Natural History - Rockford, IL

Burpee Museum of Natural History will use an IP Telephony solution from 3Com to enhance learning with outreach and after school education classes that are held at the site.

City of Jacksonville - Jacksonville, FL

The 13th largest school district in the country, Duval County Schools along with the City of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce will implement 3Com(R) IP Wireless LAN solutions to its JaxWIZ project that will help provide internet access to disadvantaged residents and improve students' learning.

City of Plainfield - Plainfield, NJ

The City of Plainfield will implement IP Telephony, security and networking infrastructure upgrades from 3Com as part of its Plainfield Technology Infrastructure Plan. The city will use the equipment to enhance community municipal services.

Hawaii Department of Education - Honolulu, HI

The Department of Education, Hawaii, is implementing robust network equipment from 3Com that includes switches and routers to set the stage for voice and video applications. The school district will also be installing IP Telephony in the near future. This specific project will equip a new middle school with 3Com's networking solution to use as a model technology school.

The Potters House School - Grand Rapids, MI

The Potters House School is an urban Christian based K12 school that will be deploying a 3Com IP telephony solution to enable teachers, administrators and parents to communicate more effectively. This is especially important since the Potters House program requires the active involvement of parents in a child's progress.

The Southwest Educational Development Center - Cedar City, UT

The Southwest Educational Development Center will implement a high-speed converged LAN network from 3Com to better serve the educational networking needs of its contributory districts. Distance learning is key to bringing appropriate learning opportunities to all students in this rural community. The new network will provide the platform to help the center's distance learning offerings.
