Aegis Awards Honor Law Enforcement Training Network; Officer Survival Documentaries Recognized in National Video Competition

Business Wire - November 3, 2004

CARROLLTON, Texas -- Learning from the experience of fellow officers is one of the most effective training methods for law enforcement professionals. Three recent documentaries produced by the Law Enforcement Training Network (LETN) that depicted officer survival won two Aegis Awards and received one finalist recognition in the 2004 competition. Aegis Awards are the video industry's leading peer recognition competition for outstanding video productions and non-network TV commercials.

Aegis Awards recognized Vest Survival: The Frank Hernandez Story and Officer Down, Part 1 for their outstanding production quality in the category of "Training/Education." These videos received the competition's highest honor as 2004 Winners from a distinguished panel of judges representing video industry professionals from around the country. Officer Down, Part 2: Ray Wolfenbarger, also an LETN video production, is a 2004 Finalist, the second prize of the Aegis Awards.

"Producing training videos that are informative and engaging takes a unique combination of educational elements and production savvy," said Randy Corbin, general manager of LETN. "Earning three Aegis Awards proves to us that we are achieving our goal to provide law enforcement professionals with high-quality programs that successfully incorporate valuable training elements."

Writer and producer Bill Quiett created all three videos for the Roll Call series on LETN. LETN provides training and education for law enforcement professionals via the internet, dedicated satellite, videotape, CD-ROM, and DVD subscriptions. Roll Call productions are designed to increase the risk awareness and safety level among law enforcement personnel and use a documentary-style format to highlight real-life incidents of officer survival. Roll Call incorporates a combination of interviews, actual footage, re-enactments, and 3-D animations to create a dynamic training experience for viewers and offers tactics to prevent injury and death on the job. Aegis winner Vest Survival: The Frank Hernandez Story emphasized the importance of officers wearing their ballistic vests. These vests usually are intended to save officers from gunshots, but the documentary recounts how the vest saved a patrolman from a 2X6 board that impaled him in his chest. The video also earned a nomination for a 2004 Katie Award from the Dallas (TX) Press Club.

Officer Down, Part 1 recounts an incident in which two officers were involved in a deadly gun battle with a motorist during a traffic stop. Officer Down, Part 2: Ray Wolfenbarger is a story of survival after a young South Bend, Indiana officer is gunned down during a late night traffic stop. Despite his critical wounds, he overcame obstacles such as impending brain damage and permanent paralysis and is back on the job studying to become a firearms examiner.

"The real-life accounts highlighted in all three videos represents the incredible risks officers are up against everyday of their career," said the programs' producer, Bill Quiett, a 29-year broadcast professional. "The thought of creating a video that has the potential to save the lives of those officers compels me to strive towards excellence with every show."
