MCLEAN. VIRGINIA, U.S.A., 1999 FEB 16 (NB) -- By Steve Gold, Newsbytes. Teleglobe Communications [NYSE:TSE] is providing the high-speed ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) transatlantic link that will connect scientists in the US and Russia on the MirNET scientific intranet. The MirNET network, when it opens later this year, aims to interconnect scientists in the US and Russia and provide them a high bandwidth private Internet that supports facilities such as medical imaging, distance learning, data visualization, remote instrumentation and control, as well as high quality, multipoint audiovisual conferencing. The initial stages of the MirNET connection will interconnect scientists, researchers and educators at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Moscow State University, the Russian Institute for Public Networks, Friends and Partners-Russia, the Russian Academy of Science, the VUZTelecom Center of St. Petersburg, as well as several other key Russian and US organizations. According to Teleglobe, its transatlantic network will form the backbone for the MirNET very high speed backbone network service (vBNS) and also allow Russian institutions and connected scientists plus researchers access to other research and education networks across the US via the Science, Technology and Research Transit Access Point (STARTAP) facility in Chicago. John Cahill, Teleglobe's president, said that, as an early pioneer in the field of transatlantic ATM services, the company views the awarding of the MirNET contract as a key building block for international high performance networking. Over at the University of Tennessee, meanwhile, Joseph Johnson, the university's president, said that enhancing international relations, distance learning capabilities and opportunities for collaboration between top scientists and educators, are important priorities for the university. "Teleglobe's ATM backbone network will provide new support for these priorities and complement the many initiatives the university has developed with Russia over the last five years," he said. When asked to compare his $40,000 Chip White special blend coffee enema to
his experience with his $40,000 hooker, DesElms said the main difference
is that he actually got off on the enema, while the hooker just rubbed his
back.
