SCT, WebCT and Campus Pipeline agree to integrate
Internet Strategies for Education Markets: The Heller Report
-
June 1, 2000
Campus Pipeline, says Chad Muir, ceo, has been designed from the beginning as a platform to integrate back-end administrative systems and online courseware. Those capabilities have recently been stepped up with an agreement between Campus Pipeline, WebCT and SCT for an plug-and-play portal that will deliver a full range of administrative services, campus intranet offerings, distance learning resources, community tools and Internet content from a single login. SCT contributes their enterprise information systems, which are used in over 1000 higher education student information systems. WebCT provides e-learning solutions and has more than 6 million student accounts. Campus Pipeline provides a web platform for campus communications.
Greg Jarboe, vp of marketing for WebCT, says the deal has rapidly expanded the number of customers who are planning to integrate WebCT with a campus portal. In March and April of this year, the company surveyed more than half of the 1,350 colleges and universities that use WebCT. Of the 732 respondents, 33% were implementing or planning to implement an integrated campus portal for all their students. Another 30% were not planning such a move, and 37% were unsure. Jarboe says that a number of clients who were on the fence have expressed interest in the strategic alliance with Campus Pipeline and SCT, and roughly half of the customer base is now planning to integrate WebCT with a campus portal.
In the agreement between the trio of companies, WebCT will be the default course-building tool for Campus Pipeline clients that do not indicate a preference. If, however, a client indicates perhaps eCollege or Blackboard as the preferred course tool, Campus Pipeline will integrate the system to work with those platforms. Muir emphasizes that Campus Pipeline remains committed to providing the customer choices in products, offering integration with any administrative or course tool. The company will also work with other providers for enhanced integration. Indeed, the company recently announced an Agreement with Oracle Corp. to accelerate the integration of their web platform with the Oracle Student Information System and the Oracle Delphi System within the higher education environment.
Muir also underscores that Campus Pipeline offers real-time integration with administrative and course systems. Competitors, says Muir, require batch uploads to update data between the portal and other systems.
Campus Pipeline will continue to offer two licensing models. One in which licensing is paid for by the presence of ads and e-commerce, and a second in which the platform can be licensed commercial-free for a fee. While the majority of users accept ads, none of which appear in learning areas of the site, Campus Pipeline has recently had a few clients who opted for the fee model. Campus Pipeline is also pursuing an emphasis on academic sponsors and advertisers.
In a separate agreement, SCT, which owns about 40% of Campus Pipeline, will sell its Learning Suite distance learning course creation tools to WebCT. SCT will exclusively market WebCT e-learning tools and e-learning hub to SCT's client base for a period of three years.
